Our 20s are perhaps the most important years of our life, at least in terms of our career. It’s that time of one’s life where usually, you get your first job, learn a thousand lessons and if you are lucky enough, you might even realize what your ultimate goal in life is going to be. But of course, the amount of hard work that this decade of your life requires you to put in is what we consider insane. Or at least, we did till now.
Hard work and passion got a new meaning when we learnt about Varun Khullar, an Indian music producer and DJ. And trust us when we say this, he’s unlike any other DJ you’ve seen.
Varun is India’s first differently-abled DJ and the world’s second after Sir Paul Johnson.
3 years back, in 2014, Varun was a regular 24-year-old pursuing a marketing course. Just like people his age, he too was a travel freak and his favorite destinations to spend his vacations were the hills.
He secured a marketing job with a firm in Gurgaon while his passion for music took a back seat. But an accident in the year 2014 changed his life and career.
On a June trip to Manali with a group of friends, all was well and good as they drove through the mountains, until 4th of June. At 4:30 in the morning, an accident with a truck resulted in their car falling in the deep abyss of the mountain shaft. They fell 25 feet below the mountain road only to be saved by a solid stone protruding from the mountain. Luckily enough, the truck was an army truck, so Varun and his friends were rescued immediately from the spot and were admitted to the nearest hospital. Although they were all out of danger, Varun’s fate had something else. His spinal cord was injured badly which meant that for the rest of his life, he would be paralyzed below the waist.
Paralysis, whether partial or complete, is one of the worst conditions known to mankind. Besides the physical trauma, the thoughts that cross one’s mind could easily be suicidal. For the next two years, Varun’s life was limited within the four falls of his home for two years resulting in depression.
But eventually, he decided to make the best out of the fact that he was alive. He started learning music production on his own by watching YouTube videos and reading books by different artists for two years.
He then went on to apply at all the best DJ schools in India only to be rejected by them. He finally made it to a DJ school- ILM Academy in Gurgaon that marked the beginning of his career as a DJ.
His first gig, however, did not come easy. After lots of rejections, exchange of emails and depressing moments, Varun finally got his first chance at one of the top hotels in Delhi.
Soon he became a sensation and an inspiration to youngsters all over the country. So much so, that he will now be opening the multi-genre music festival ‘Time Out 72’, which will have performances by American singer Jason Derulo and Dutch DJ Martin Garrix, in Goa in the month of December this year.
Varun is currently working as a resident DJ for Kitty Su, ranked the 87th best club in the world, owned by Lalit Group of Hotels and Keshav Suri and goes by the name of DJ Amish
His never-say-die spirit is a constant which clearly reflects in his words. In an interview with ‘The Better India’ he said, “If you want to achieve anything, NOTHING COMES EASY. I am not an expert, even I am learning. You only learn from your mistakes. It will take time, took me 4 years. Never forget, dreams are all we’re made of.”
